Sprints are double-edged swords. From time to time they are great, but if you do them frequently you’ll get burnt. But, I still love sprints.
By sprints I mean when you block one day (or week) and commit yourself to spend those 24 hours to finish something and ship it.
The beauty of it is that sprints force you to focus on the important¬†and get stuff done, because when you commit yourself to ship something in less than 24 hours, you can’t get distracted.
You also get the benefit of the Parkison’s Law: “work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion.” So when you commit yourself to ship something in a day or week, there’s no reason to fool around. You just get the work done.
And it’s not a coincidence that I’m posting this idea today, when everybody is on holidays.
Right now, when everybody is on the beach, you can sprint and get ahead of them by the end of the month.
Ship something today. It’ll be worth it.
